Diazepam (commonly known by its original brand name, Valium) is a long-acting prescription medication belonging to the benzodiazepine drug class. It acts as a central nervous system (CNS) depressant and is widely prescribed to treat anxiety, muscle spasms, seizures, and acute alcohol withdrawal.

Critical Warning: Interaction with Xyrem (Sodium Oxybate)

If you or someone you know is taking Xyrem, combining it with Diazepam is highly dangerous and generally contraindicated. Both medications are powerful CNS depressants. Taking them together exponentially increases the risk of severe respiratory depression (slowed or stopped breathing), profound sedation, coma, and death. Always disclose all medications to your healthcare provider before starting either drug.

Therapeutic Uses & Indications

• Anxiety Disorders: Used for the short-term relief of severe, disabling, or distressing anxiety symptoms.
• Acute Alcohol Withdrawal: Helps manage agitation, tremors, and impending or acute delirium tremens.
• Muscle Spasms: Acts as an adjunctive treatment to relieve skeletal muscle spasms caused by local pathology or upper motor neuron disorders.
• Seizure Control: Utilized adjunctively to control major motor seizures and status epilepticus (prolonged seizure activity).

Core Side Effects & Safety Risks

• Common Side Effects: Drowsiness, fatigue, muscle weakness, and ataxia (loss of full control of bodily movements).
• Dependence and Tolerance: Prolonged use can lead to physical and psychological dependence. Suddenly stopping Diazepam after long-term use can cause severe withdrawal symptoms, including seizures. It must be tapered under medical supervision.
• Black Box Warnings: Diazepam carries strict warnings regarding the risks of abuse, misuse, addiction, physical dependence, and life-threatening withdrawal reactions.
